Students will have the opportunity to explore the power of belief and trance states on healing in a new documentary produced by Emily Edwards, professor in the Department of Broadcasting and Cinema at UNCG. The 55-minute film is a joint project between Edwards and Dr. Jim McClenon, a sociology professor at Elizabeth City State University. Edwards directed and produced the film, which was inspired by McClenon's book, also called “Wondrous Healing.” The documentary explores phenomena such as hypnotic and placebo effects, extrasensory perception and 'hallucinations of bereavement,' in which those who have lost loved ones have claimed the dead have visited them in the afterlife. More than 100 people were interviewed, including medical doctors and lawyers. "I hope this film helps people understand this important component to health," McClenon said. "It's more than surgery and taking drugs. There is a psychological component and it is linked to spirituality." (55 min.)
